The participle allomorphs in Buzuku’s Old Albanian
The so-called participle of Albanian is an uninflected verbal derivative with multiple functions (perfect, infinitive, gerund, and others). In Modern Albanian and in most texts after 1600, each verb has only a single participle, but in Buzuku's priests' manual of 1555, a number of vocalic verb stems show up to three different suffixes in competition for the same function. The aim of this talk, which presents a snapshot of work in progress, is to determine some of the formal and functional factors behind the apparently chaotic distribution of the participle allomorphs in Buzuku's Old Albanian.
